Not to mention I think most people have moved away from reading blogs... the quick social media updates are sufficient, I guess.<br />
<br />
But...<br />
<br />
a new seminary year has begun, and I wanted to share one of my favorite tools I use in class:<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">POST-IT NOTES.</span><br />
<br />
I know this isn't my original idea, but I made the template myself and have used it over and over and over. I hope to share a few of the post-it's I've made over the past couple of years... eventually. I only have the time tonight for a couple, but {hopefully} more will be coming.<br />
<br />
Here is what my blank template looks like for 3x3" post-it notes:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGmA7bArTMpAqSNiDU8j7YJjbBaaLAiuHUY6SKddZmgW4jVXXCGiw45H3rMfmhGhtvObjZnlzYVHB-OHuzMy7RKW-IPLTxg8DuRDuiuhRlq1JH3gH-q9ip0aenlT_SH8Ez8tljIpCK1PE/s1600/BlankPostItTemplate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1219" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGmA7bArTMpAqSNiDU8j7YJjbBaaLAiuHUY6SKddZmgW4jVXXCGiw45H3rMfmhGhtvObjZnlzYVHB-OHuzMy7RKW-IPLTxg8DuRDuiuhRlq1JH3gH-q9ip0aenlT_SH8Ez8tljIpCK1PE/s640/BlankPostItTemplate.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GBEZgVdPTNagKhce53w-B5_wmlObAI3V/view?usp=sharing">You can access the file for it here. </a></span><br />
<br />
You will want print a few pages of the blank template for printing your post-its. **Make sure you don't use the "fit to page" tab when printing, and that you have the scale at 100%** I have 21 kids in my class, so I print 4 pages of post-its when I make them hand out. I re-use these blank pages over and over.<br />
<br />
When I want to make a new post-it, I ALWAYS make a COPY of my blank template before filling it in with my picture/quote/scripture reference/definitions/etc., so I don't have to reinvent a template every time. Hopefully that makes sense :-) I use PowerPoint... and an old version of it, so I'm not sure it will be helpful to explain my process. I love PPT because you can easily manipulate where you want words, their font & size, and you can add pictures over or under the text. I don't really use it as it was intended... for slide presentations.<br />
<br />
Here is an example of what it looks like when I've finished my text for the post-its:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTxSwp-DbnmpChkINOCjaRDgZK_NufDJessfzzG9rJ_zOlXgSr7jNED30yqmfYOgjgk83y0bvHidyRlE1znX_p3UH6ZkobVPb4D8RIXL5I0AKvkl6POzmKjbKW41O7SkWA4pzfxyS_qwc/s1600/Matt11YokePostIt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1219" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTxSwp-DbnmpChkINOCjaRDgZK_NufDJessfzzG9rJ_zOlXgSr7jNED30yqmfYOgjgk83y0bvHidyRlE1znX_p3UH6ZkobVPb4D8RIXL5I0AKvkl6POzmKjbKW41O7SkWA4pzfxyS_qwc/s640/Matt11YokePostIt.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xpjsmMKnJs7WAN2zJEo5BgRrvVMurjWS/view?usp=sharing">You can access the template for this post-it here. </a></span><br />
Because I was low on printer ink, I printed these in black and white, and they still turned out awesome.<br />
<br />
Once I print them, I keep them on the blank template, put them on a clipboard, and pass them around to the class. They each take one and pop it in their scriptures or study journal.<br />

I've added a "Post-it's" PAGE and will put links to all of my templates there. xoxo<br />

<br />
I actually got this idea from my sister, who teaches seminary in California. She had shown me how she had her class use their study journals last year by separating them out into Doctrinal Mastery topics. Since my class hardly used their study journals last year, I thought this was a <span style="font-size: x-large;">FANTASTIC </span>way to put them to better use this year. (Each student gets a new journal each year.)<br />
<br />
My sister had tabbed her own study journal with those tiny post-it note tabs, but said she didn't do that for her class - they just had to find each section by flipping through their journal. As I thought about it, I decided it would be a great idea to put paper tabs on the journals prior to handing them out to the students at the beginning of the year.<br />
<br />
I made <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZVcOm5VTFL1Cx4gJjolVxCDf5lmujjfJ/view?usp=sharing"><span style="font-size: x-large;">a quick grid</span></a> on my computer, then printed them on each color of cardstock. A couple other teachers wanted to tab the journals for their classes as well, so we had a mini journal-tabbing party in preparation for the year to start.<br />
<br />
Once I printed the tabs on colored cardstock, I used an exacto knife to cut them out (you could use scissors, but the exacto was pretty quick and I could cut two sheets at a time). We then folded them in half, and used double-sided tape (<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Advanced-Glider-4-Inch-36-Yard/dp/B00409NNYM?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_5">we used this kind</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Double-Adhesive-Roller-Inches/dp/B01MRZ88TW?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_9">this kind</a>) on each end to stick them to the blank journal pages. You could definitely use a gluestick for that, too.<br />
<br />
I made <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/15jyrO_1h-pEFFX3TDmwXwpGGzmebDlO9/view?usp=sharing"><span style="font-size: x-large;">this handy guide</span></a> to use while placing the tabs:<br />

<br />
Now that we've been using them for a few months, I have really <span style="font-size: x-large;">loved</span> having the tabs. I counted out three sheets of blank journal pages per topic as I placed the tabs, with a couple extra pages at the end for extra journaling. Another teacher at the tabbing party only had one page per DM topic, which totally works, too. If I am still teaching Seminary next year, I will probably leave two pages per DM topic, with a few more extra pages for journaling.<br />
<br />
I have been making glue-ins (quotes, mini worksheets, etc) for the journals as well, which saves space for the kids to journal also.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RxEOMUuiQHVX7cZXdTfsGF_asayVsLhd/view?usp=sharing"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Here</span></a> is a quick example of a recent glue-in we used under the DM topic of commandments.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I love this idea.</span> It has worked amazingly well. We are using our DM Core Document and study journals much more efficiently and effectively this year. Thank you, dear sister!<br />

I had every good intention to post many of the things I do for my Seminary class, not only to pass them along to others who may be looking for some tiny bit of inspiration (because sometimes that's what gets personal revelation flowing), but for my own future use should I need it. (I can't tell you how many Seminary teachers I know that are on a second round of 4 years... or more.)<br />
<br />
Needless to say, Seminary is keeping me BUSY, and I don't have much time for 'splainin' why I'm not consistent. Haha.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">My class loves post-it notes. </span><br />
I've discovered a simple way to make them (I shared the link to the how-to a couple of posts back). I've included here the link to a blank page + a link to a printed page that goes with this particular lesson (#107!!). I print 3 blank sheets out, then reuse them until they get too old to go through my printer well. I then tack blank post-it notes to the blank sheets, then print the printed sheet on top. Ta-da! I put the full sheets of printed post-its on a clipboard, then just pass it out in class and each student takes one and pops it into their scriptures. I can then re-use the blank pages.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Blank Post-it template <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zD2Ip_ThmKKisv1Tbdodd4oWaCs3-pIi/view?usp=sharing">HERE</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Helaman 3 Post-it notes <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TNJis02ZT13YThTmh24ERMG0qYFgMAil/view?usp=sharing">HERE</a></span><br />
<br />
<i>*Note: I believe you need to make sure the "fit to page" is OFF when you print these from a pdf. I will test... as soon as I can haha.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
And since I'm giving this lesson tomorrow (and tying it into Mardi Gras... SO much going on!), and since I already made this handout for my Visiting Teaching friends, and since it fits perfectly with the quote I used on my post-it, and since it's the day before Valentines Day, I'm throwing this in for fun:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWBGz9aImw2ytfdHh7kCgoC1_TNnhyphenhyphensIVgUEdOAGa0YCE50Tk5yRUvuPpHMqKJDd_ExiZGobH_X9SxXqwhSVQmcuVyk8mZWoC4hYD0__iATKxI3vv8H0V07YyBTZBtcRZO_2BamRLU3N8/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="540" data-original-width="720" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWBGz9aImw2ytfdHh7kCgoC1_TNnhyphenhyphensIVgUEdOAGa0YCE50Tk5yRUvuPpHMqKJDd_ExiZGobH_X9SxXqwhSVQmcuVyk8mZWoC4hYD0__iATKxI3vv8H0V07YyBTZBtcRZO_2BamRLU3N8/s640/Slide1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I<i> call these "glue-ins"... my students can use a glue-stick and glue along the back of the left edge, then carefully add it into their scriptures or Study Journals. My team teacher and I gave each student a paper copy of the Book of Mormon this year, lest you worry that we are encouraging them to do too many crazy things (like glue-ins) in their expensive scriptures (although I have every intention of marking up/post-it noting/using glue-ins in the next set I get!)</i></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">VALENTINE printable link <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w2DseSz9txPkqcTXLKiKdc6v2myTj3Ft/view?usp=sharing">HERE</a></span><br />
<br />
If I have a few extra minutes tomorrow (hahahaha), I'll explain how I'm tying Mardi Gras to Helaman 3-4, and Lent to Helaman 5. Not my own original idea, I'll admit, but it's <span style="font-size: x-large;">awesome.</span> That's why I'm so grateful for other seasoned teachers who share their great ideas!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">**Visiting Teaching BONUS</span>... <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/150suNKtQLsYY-wbFjVDvDGNwhkwl6j5M/view?usp=sharing">here's the link to my VT handout</a>, which is similar to the one above, but with an additional scripture that went along with the bread and jam I gave with it :-) I'm seriously over-achieving this week (and I don't mean that in a good way haha)!<br />

HOWEVER, I managed to complete the project by using what I already had on hand. YAY!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
As you can see from the above picture, I have yet to finish assembling the cards for the second half of the year. I debated about whether to hand them all out at once, or to give them out as we covered them in class. Because it took some time to get all of them done, I ended up giving them the first cards we covered (from the<i> Acquiring Spiritual Knowledge </i>segment), then we added all the cards up to the semester break, and I am completing all the remaining cards today. I decided that it would be good for the kids to <span style="font-size: x-large;">have them all now</span> so they can study and review them, and use them as needed in class.<br />
<br />
I borrowed the graphics for these cards <a href="http://www.themormonhome.com/book-of-mormon-doctrinal-mastery-2017/">from here</a>. There are some awesome free printables with these same graphics... just not cards in the size and format I wanted. Darn.<br />
<br />
Here are the links for each card, with 8 cards per page. On <i>my</i> printer this layout printed perfectly front-to-back, but you may want to <span style="font-size: x-large;">check it FIRST</span> because all printers are different, and there may be some slight size modifications in the powerpoint-to-pdf transfer. You may need to print one side, then print the other. I printed on colored paper to go with the doctrine each scripture falls under, then laminated them, cut (again), and hole-punched them.<br />

No long explanation, just ideas I've used in teaching a particular lesson. Some of them I've found elsewhere, then maybe tweaked a bit. I will try to acknowledge any sites I use for ideas (still just recycling, repurposing, and reusing).<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Today was 1 Nephi 8.</span><br />
<br />
I had a couple of the kids draw on the whiteboard as we read - it turned out to be really great!<br />

<br />
That's all I got for today... on to tomorrow's lesson!Tinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08693128405088608808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8344437777585158395.post-89497185518493678722017-08-10T11:21:00.000-07:002017-08-10T11:26:36.602-07:00WELCOME TO SEMINARYSo... I was recently called as an early morning seminary teacher.<br />
<br />
This is inwardly one of my most respected callings (I've always admired anyone who has served in this way), and one of my most feared! And although I already have those inward jitters and shakes about standing in front of a large class (20ish) of 15-turning-16-year-olds (sophomores), I am also surprisingly EXCITED.<br />
<br />
Our seminary starts on Monday, but my beautiful daughter just had a baby, and since my plans prior to my call were to travel to UT to help her for a week once the baby arrived, I am sticking with them. Lucky for me, I serve in a Stake where the majority of seminary classes are taught by team teachers. (Yay! Hope for a seminary teacher/family life/personal life balance!)<br />
<br />
My delightful team teacher will kindly manage the first week of seminary, and while she drops a child off at college the second week, I'll be in charge. Scary.<br />
<br />
The last time I have been in seminary (other than the parent's day our last Stake held on the first day to give basic rules and guidelines, and to meet your child's teacher) was when I was in <span style="font-size: x-large;">high school</span>. (Over 30 years ago, btw.) I grew up in UT, so had released time seminary, and, sad to say, I don't remember much (other than a few cheesy filmstrips, rhyming scripture mastery phrases, and the boy who asked me to the Homecoming dance my sophomore year that I had to turn down because I wasn't 16). So basically, I've got nothin' on that front.<br />
<br />
But <span style="font-size: x-large;">I love being with the youth</span>, and feel that I've been blessed with the ability to relate and connect with them when I've been called to do so. I've always felt magnified beyond my own natural abilities and disposition. I'm praying for those same blessings this time. I'm a bit tentative because everyone I talk to focuses on the one kid (or two, or three, or more) who sleeps the whole time... or looks at her phone the whole time... or who is disruptive and disrespectful. I'm gearing up for such a scenario, but also hope I can influence any and all of them for good. I want to be an example of how the gospel of Jesus Christ makes our lives joyful.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I've decided to add my seminary stuff to my singing time blog, if only because I really don't want to take the time to create anything new. I think I can manage a quick title change... and it's all for the same purpose of bringing children and youth to Christ, right?? Hopefully it doesn't throw anyone off!<br />
<br />
My team teacher ("Sister Holt" from here on out) and I decided that we would have the youth in our class use the paper-bound copies of the Book of Mormon for seminary. We will <span style="font-size: x-large;">not</span> have the youth access their scriptures from their phones. We don't want to see their phones AT ALL. This was on the advice of my youngest daughter, who completed her sophomore year of seminary this past year. I can definitely see the wisdom in it.<br />
<br />
Our hope is that the kids will not be afraid to mess up their little paper copy, and will write notes, glue in quotes, mark up, and USE THEM. I have a vision of weathered and worn copies that need to be held together with rubber bands at the end of the year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8WZJPPN0tSk9pTWU1gmf6sq-7oaotvIgmcVxwks7IL89OKVdNsbh4Kxlxs1B9TFoeccXzEQQ7qMrmbDCw4D66fYOcn1cXipFhfoZGrYh6d2jqLXuYbuOqUvgxNt9pnWSZHSCvvqG7dlI/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="756" height="486" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8WZJPPN0tSk9pTWU1gmf6sq-7oaotvIgmcVxwks7IL89OKVdNsbh4Kxlxs1B9TFoeccXzEQQ7qMrmbDCw4D66fYOcn1cXipFhfoZGrYh6d2jqLXuYbuOqUvgxNt9pnWSZHSCvvqG7dlI/s640/Slide1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is just a little insert I typed up for the kids to put in the front of their Book of Mormon copy. They will have the option to glue it in, tape it in, or use it as a bookmark. I feel that it's simple enough not to overwhelm.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://strongarmor.blogspot.com/2013/06/tips-for-effective-scripture-study.html">I found the original here</a>, but when I printed it, it wasn't very clear/easy to read. And if you've followed my singing time blog, you already know I often like to tweak and repurpose the ideas of others. (BTW... I'm using some of that Primary stuff for seminary... the UNO game would totally work with learning doctrinal mastery scriptures.)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6S_8KBQBYDxWWIyV2dTRFBkRUk/view?usp=sharing">You can get the pdf doc here.</a><br />
<br />
I hope to add more throughout the year.<br />
Pray for me (or at least wish me luck)!<br />

<br />
Subbing for 3 weeks (so fun!).<br />
<br />
Since the kids are <strike>quite</strike> <i>very</i> familiar with the two songs they have been working on so far this year, and I know they love, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">love</span>, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">LOVE</span> the handbells, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">and</span> I spotted a quick-to-print handbell chart <a href="http://intheleafytreetopsthebirdssing.blogspot.com/2013/01/i-am-child-of-god-bell-chart.html">here</a>, I thought it would be the perfect thing to do this week.<br />
<br />
The only problem - my handbells are different colors than on <a href="http://intheleafytreetopsthebirdssing.blogspot.com/2013/01/i-am-child-of-god-bell-chart.html">Nalani's chart</a>.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">(I didn't even think to see if I could CHANGE the colors on her chart... until now.)</span><br />
<br />
Luckily, it was easy to transfer over to a simplified version (took me all of 30 minutes - or less), quick to print, and fast to laminate and bind Sunday morning before heading off to church.<br />
<br />
It's a little different format than I've used before, so I wasn't sure how well it would go over, especially for Jr. Primary.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">It worked like a charm. </span> Made me wonder why on earth I ever lugged those big posterboard-type handbell charts to church. The Jr. Primary actually did better than the Sr. in the initial run-through. Sr. Primary made it through all four verses, though ;-)<br />
<br />
Just thought I would post it because... it's done. And this is a great place to store it and allow access for<br />
<br />

<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1811&Itemid=405">Shake, Rattle, and Roll</a> worked like a charm last week.</span><br />
<br />
I skipped out of church a little early to go to our local YSA ward to hear my daughter speak, so I asked one of my tried-and-true subs to fill in for Sr. Primary the third hour.<br />
<br />
Later that day she texted, "You are a singing time genius!! So fun!! So creative!"<br />
<br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Not my idea</span></i>, but I'm glad it worked as well for her as it did for me in Jr.<br />
<br />
Here is my box:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6I3YCrVcOwCt972J5PxCPn-KiLI2LIQpVLs2eZZubdhP57Thhyphenhyphen199PnE1Jaiecup88G_mwXlWpFMDr-rIkH_PfMHGfFuV1XWoWKc6bzqqp1TBmtNeF7u0KvlUYmzrYmaS9TrBxIe9H74/s1600/P1110263.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6I3YCrVcOwCt972J5PxCPn-KiLI2LIQpVLs2eZZubdhP57Thhyphenhyphen199PnE1Jaiecup88G_mwXlWpFMDr-rIkH_PfMHGfFuV1XWoWKc6bzqqp1TBmtNeF7u0KvlUYmzrYmaS9TrBxIe9H74/s640/P1110263.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
(I discovered while searching for wrapping paper that I only had three rolls, two of which were a homespun-kraft-paper type. I haven't purchased wrapping paper for a good 3 years, determined to use up the myriad of rolls I had collected over the past 20 years. I guess it's finally time to purchase a few more.)<br />
<br />
I took a basic Kleenex tissue box, trimmed off the plastic stuff covering the cut-out in the center of the box, extended the length of the hole a bit (trying to make it as child-user-friendly as possible), then wrapped it up. I had some thick grosgrain ribbon left over from another project, and even though it wasn't the red or green I had hoped for, it still worked like a charm. Besides, I'm not sure kids notice that kind of stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYlpm07QWaLQ0V_YlI5eGpCSlrkNhej6v2kyJRWD2yBndFJ_Cl2Z6eNPR9w33UrY-lT2DP76yBnNtQ57xnHBzyP9x2MxXlJnrBY89duTnuwTGmwaH54j2pw3bqvqD_mMD3JTscl5nD4z0/s1600/P1110264.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYlpm07QWaLQ0V_YlI5eGpCSlrkNhej6v2kyJRWD2yBndFJ_Cl2Z6eNPR9w33UrY-lT2DP76yBnNtQ57xnHBzyP9x2MxXlJnrBY89duTnuwTGmwaH54j2pw3bqvqD_mMD3JTscl5nD4z0/s640/P1110264.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I cut slits on each side at the back of the box and threaded the ribbon through. I did some extra taping in an effort to make my flimsy box more durable and able to withstand some serious bouncing around.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The box still looked a bit bland, so I added the gold bow down the center, hoping that it wouldn't make the game too difficult. (After seeing the first helper go at it, I was glad for the extra "challenge.")</div>

<br />
I had plenty of bells left over in my Christmas stash (have I ever told you I am a reformed crafter??). I think I put in a total of 22 or so.<br />
<br />
I tied the box to the chosen helper (I still love those choosing sticks!), with the box on his back. While we sang the song <i>Christmas Bells</i>, the helper had to bounce and wiggle around to see how many bells he/she could get to come out. My first 6-year-old helper got 19!<br />
<br />
From what I hear, the Sr. Primary loved the game just as much. I promised the kids I would bring it again this Sunday. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Love that.</span><br />
<br />
<i>As Amanda mentioned, you could totally use this activity in Singing Time any time of the year. You could use different objects - she had mentioned golf balls (they might destroy the box, but you could test it at home first), cotton balls, plastic bugs, wrapped candy...</i><br />
<br />
I also key-changed the song, since it's <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">{way}</span> too high for me. I love the functionality of the Church website!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNj_qBdcYIZrxeCYPaAXmGu7ednpSyWC9r9MoRo6gmU3JJVNKghHb5hzkKVminu-K0tBMxnBXzjcleBTEFhyphenhyphenfMMyuESOQyKE7K9M699MC3b6aSxQGgm-7ZFfu5RP9sgCpaEwPS_QVWQZc/s1600/00017V.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNj_qBdcYIZrxeCYPaAXmGu7ednpSyWC9r9MoRo6gmU3JJVNKghHb5hzkKVminu-K0tBMxnBXzjcleBTEFhyphenhyphenfMMyuESOQyKE7K9M699MC3b6aSxQGgm-7ZFfu5RP9sgCpaEwPS_QVWQZc/s640/00017V.jpeg" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On a sad-ish happy-ish note, I have been extended a release from my calling as the Primary Chorister. I am ready for it, but I will miss it as well. I will be finishing out the year, then <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/sharing-time-and-talents.html">handing it off</a> </span>to the new Chorister. She is nervous (I was too). She doesn't feel like she's very musical (I felt that way too). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">She will do an awesome job.</span></div>

This doesn't have anything to do with Singing Time, but it fits into the Primary category, so I thought I would share. This was NOT my original idea<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"> (few things are)</span><i>.</i> Last year the Activity Day girls drew and colored pictures of the nativity, and the Bishopric selected a few of the pictures and put them on the Christmas cards they sent to the ward members. I thought it was a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">{brilliant}</span> idea.<br />
<br />
Since this is the first Christmas my husband has served as a Bishop, and since I loved the idea so much, I suggested he do the same. He asked the 10-11 year old Activity Day girls to draw the pictures. Once the pictures had been submitted, it was my job to determine how to include as many as possible on the cards and get the cards ordered. <br />
I had two days.<br />
<br />
Costco was my obvious first choice, but I spent an entire day perusing the internet for other possibilites. Costco would print them in sets of 50, but that would only allow me to use 3 of the pictures. I wasn't thrilled with the pre-designed templates to choose from either. After comparing all the options, I decided that due to time and expense constraints, Costco would have to do. I went back and checked over the templates one more time. This time I discovered an option that said, <i>"Create your own design."</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">{Miracle.}</span><br />
<br />
Here are a couple of the finished cards:<br />
<br />

<br />
They turned out <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">awesome</span>. This is such a fun way to showcase the girls AND send a wonderful Christmas message.<br />
<br />
If you pass this idea along in your ward, here are a couple of tips (learned the hard way):<br />
<ul>
<li>Make sure the girls know what you are specifically looking for. My husband had asked the Activity Day leaders to have the girls draw <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">NATIVITY</span> scenes. (One of the pictures came back with a couch by a fireplace.) </li>
<li>Tell the girls that the picture needs to be on a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">blank piece of paper</span>. (One of the pictures came back on lined notebook paper.) The girls in our ward just used white computer paper.</li>
<li>My daughter said that last year the girls made them <i>at</i> Activity Days. That way the leaders could help advise, and all the pictures were turned in in time. This year the leaders just handed out the papers and asked the girls to turn them in by a certain date, probably because the request from the Bishop came a little late.</li>
<li>Have the girls write their name somewhere on the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">front</span> of the picture, that way ward members will know who did the artwork. (One picture was just slipped under the door of the Bishop's office without a name.)</li>
</ul>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Happy December!</span></div>

It has been a <span style="font-size: x-large;">cRaZy</span> week, but in a spare moment here and there I have looked for ideas for upcoming Singing Times. After some super-quick browsing, I've decided to use <a href="http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1811&Itemid=405"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Shake, Rattle and Roll</span></a> (found in the comment section - thanks, Amanda!)<br />
<br />
and <a href="http://beehivemessages.blogspot.com/2009/12/primary-music-idea-merry-musical.html"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Christmas Singing Mittens</span></a> for the next few weeks.<br />
<br />
I also noticed last year that the children in my ward were surprisingly unfamiliar with <i>Away in a Manger</i>, so I put together a flip chart to help them along <i>this</i> year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjntWHCxVI-jjPVfyumFGEFuyaMB0pDKCG1vMJGqga_cuYYYlgmy2pfa3TNi0B-Lv_VJ29wkczduSn3KDeU03Cf6EktHILsRGqpvjKE7jqG7Ue9qBtaQBiZiBqa7_1Oa2gxM9h0JlgC7fk/s1600/0001DF.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjntWHCxVI-jjPVfyumFGEFuyaMB0pDKCG1vMJGqga_cuYYYlgmy2pfa3TNi0B-Lv_VJ29wkczduSn3KDeU03Cf6EktHILsRGqpvjKE7jqG7Ue9qBtaQBiZiBqa7_1Oa2gxM9h0JlgC7fk/s640/0001DF.jpeg" width="470" /></a></div>

I've mentioned a million times that I'm all for <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">reusing</span>. A couple weeks back I decided to reuse my <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/11/rafter-of-turkeys.html">turkeys</a> from last year. I hadn't laminated them, but had put them away (<i>sans</i> balloons) in my trusty <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/sharing-time-and-talents.html">file</a> for future use.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn8CP9TXQD2NAipt_bwu_czwFzmtNLkCMhbay7BsOCMLSyHbewerMJGrEDvZCc-hcB7c-uy4ycyMQKPQVFjarmnPNwEVRMgRfcyqwwEWsWJKtJBF3YMfBNBlM9mFsYnC4FqCogX0zR4Hw/s1600/P1110005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn8CP9TXQD2NAipt_bwu_czwFzmtNLkCMhbay7BsOCMLSyHbewerMJGrEDvZCc-hcB7c-uy4ycyMQKPQVFjarmnPNwEVRMgRfcyqwwEWsWJKtJBF3YMfBNBlM9mFsYnC4FqCogX0zR4Hw/s640/P1110005.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">(I finally found a use for that crazy big IKEA bag I've had laying around forever.)</span><br />
<br />
In putting these cuties together, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">tape is your best friend</span>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh23DyJiEwf4D_de8MY0Jn-y1YNdsU93s-qofthiG3EDYiETX4WpV11NGmxtWHJObqsdfRlIyneud7PQYB-pKrmszD2uXawzc8n6rSrVy1FdqfyJ4rmC1Bu9N0XoM-a6Mm57OV8UmXjyR4/s1600/P1110007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh23DyJiEwf4D_de8MY0Jn-y1YNdsU93s-qofthiG3EDYiETX4WpV11NGmxtWHJObqsdfRlIyneud7PQYB-pKrmszD2uXawzc8n6rSrVy1FdqfyJ4rmC1Bu9N0XoM-a6Mm57OV8UmXjyR4/s640/P1110007.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I taped the front body to the balloon, then taped the feet to the balloon (with taped pennies on the bottom), then popped the tied part of the balloon...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjItHuxQcf_l_pvTUQk2-MWYnJMKF6oUsMOpZOblYWpOrm3PL7j4g69TMJRm5YH9IsCip8SR8gZ8lhgQ8W0M4lFJ6sLWN_JX9Ckj_EyW0ZvcUdOEgJM6inH0df-_BpnUyntFqKJ5eYtF0M/s1600/P1110008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjItHuxQcf_l_pvTUQk2-MWYnJMKF6oUsMOpZOblYWpOrm3PL7j4g69TMJRm5YH9IsCip8SR8gZ8lhgQ8W0M4lFJ6sLWN_JX9Ckj_EyW0ZvcUdOEgJM6inH0df-_BpnUyntFqKJ5eYtF0M/s640/P1110008.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
...through a hole I had poked (with the tip of a pencil) on the back. I added a little tape to the bottom <i>front</i> of the tail feathers (just above where the tie goes through the hole) to secure them a little better.<br />
<br />
Another tip: <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"> I love those easy-peel labels.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaaQr4CbtoVOAalrUqvNS0AICPnRZQuejXo-OYv4suTq_L3bXc4FTs_QBor7rzwHV6l1RlyMxf4kYkBBEyaBeN9V47ZK7CNyI3TsPGFV-EpVAk4EjtdnjujsTb_PNKYakZ7D7OIHdthbo/s1600/P1110011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaaQr4CbtoVOAalrUqvNS0AICPnRZQuejXo-OYv4suTq_L3bXc4FTs_QBor7rzwHV6l1RlyMxf4kYkBBEyaBeN9V47ZK7CNyI3TsPGFV-EpVAk4EjtdnjujsTb_PNKYakZ7D7OIHdthbo/s640/P1110011.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I use them on any visual that I want to reuse in the future (um, that would be all of them) that you need to put an activity or song on. That way you can easily change the song or directions by just writing out another label and sticking it over the old one.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">So... </span>this past Sunday was our Ward Conference. I usually get nervous and stressed when the Stake visits, even though I have been a counselor in a Stake Primary Presidency before. I determined that for <i>this </i>Ward Conference I wasn't going to do anything "special" just because the Stake would be there. I try every week to make Singing Time a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">great experience </span>for the children, so I figured that THAT was good enough. I knew we needed to review <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/My%20Heavenly%20Father%20Loves%20Me">My Heavenly Father Loves Me</a> (the song the kids had <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/10/i-voted.html">voted</a> for) for our Sacrament Meeting special musical number this upcoming week, and then I threw in a couple other Thanksgiving/Seasonal songs to break things up.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">I didn't know:</span><br />
<br />
The Stake was doing the Sharing Time, and had requested to go FIRST (we usually have it <i>after </i>Singing Time), in addition to a counselor in the Stake Presidency speaking to the children AND the assigned talks, scriptures, Articles of Faith, etc. the kids had planned on. I had 5 minutes. At the end. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">OUCH.</span><br />
<br />
Because of the requested schedule change, our Primary President forgot a Reverence Song, so when the counselor in the Stake Presidency got up to talk (Jr. Primary), he seemed a little stumped, then asked who was over the music (me) and requested we sing a song. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">(I kind of felt like he thought it was my fault we didn't do an opening song. I was just trying to follow what our sweet <i>mildly</i>-flustered Primary President had announced, without adding to her <i>flustration</i>...)</span><br />
<br />
In Sr. Primary we had a different counselor in our Stake Presidency in to talk to the kids, and he asked them what the Primary theme for the month was. Their response: THANKSGIVING!! Nope. CHOOSE THE RIGHT!! Nope. He seemed a little... concerned?... dumbfounded?... surprised?... that the children didn't know it was <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">missionary work</span>. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">(In their defense, we'd only had one week of the theme in Sharing Time, and we've been working on our special musical number - yes, Thanksgiving themed - in Singing Time.)</span><br />
<br />
Because of the Stake-requested schedule change, I missed my Singing Time in Nursery, and the kids in our Primary were on the <strike>wild</strike> <strike>loud</strike> <strike>unruly</strike> <i>wiggly</i> side, thanks to a VERY LONG extended period of <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">sitting still and listening</span>.<br />
<br />
I'm feeling a bit like it was a <strike>hot mess</strike> <strike>epic fail</strike> bit of a <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">flail</span></i>, but life goes on. Those kinds of weeks happen. Good thing perfection is not a requirement!<br />
<br />
Happy Thanksgiving/Missionary Singing!!<br />

Thinking I had enough time to get a flip chart together from start to finish, figure out how to present in Singing Time, AND gather any and all necessary accompanying visuals/props, I set out to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">git 'er done</span>. I didn't plan for my 11-year-old's meltdown over lost tithing money, nor the phone call from my hubs letting me know that BYD would be after church at <i>our</i> house. <br />
<br />
I didn't <i>quite</i> get it finished in time for church, thus on to <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/10/i-voted.html">Plan B</a>.<br />
<br />
Here's the link to the flip chart:<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxVkF3N3F1WVNfQVU">Oh, What Do You Do in the Autumn Time?</a></span><br />
<br />
I think the kids will like the tune familiarity mingled with new, season-appropriate words.<br />
<br />
<br />
15 (ish) years ago, as I was serving as a Nursery worker, the sister I worked with taught the kids these seasonally-changed lyrics to <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Popcorn Popping</span></i>:<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I looked out the window and what did I see?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Snowflakes falling on the evergreen tree.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Winter has brought me such a nice surprise:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Snowflakes falling right before my eyes!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">I can take an armful, and make a treat:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">A great big snowman, that looks so neat!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Yes, it's really so,</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">As it seems to be:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Snowflakes falling on the evergreen tree.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">(I'm sure there are other versions out there, but this is the one I've been singing...)</span><br />
<br />
Btw, the Church has an ever-increasing image library on <a href="http://www.lds.org/media-library/images?lang=eng">lds.org</a>. Be sure to check it out when looking for visuals in Primary... it's awesome!<br />

It's been a while since I've posted, mostly due to our CSMP practices/performance/after-party, General Conference, Fall Break, and Stake Conference. Despite my seemingly long hiatus, I was not as "put together" as I would have liked this morning. I spent too much time creating a flip chart that I couldn't <i>quite </i>finish (watch for it - I will post it this week), which meant I had little-to-no time for actual Singing Time preparation. Why do I do that to myself??<br />
<br />
After a prayer for inspiration, I had a thought.<br />
<br />
Our Primary has been asked to sing in Sacrament Meeting on Nov. 18th. Initially my plan was to have them sing <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/Life%20Is%20O%27erflowing">Life Is O'erflowing with Beautiful Things</a>, since we've been working on it here and there. I made the flip chart for <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/My%20Heavenly%20Father%20Loves%20Me">My Heavenly Father Loves Me</a> a few weeks back, and we learned <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/Can%20a%20Little%20Child%20like%20Me%3F">Can a Little Child Like Me?</a> last year... all of which would be appropriate and lovely for a Thanksgiving-themed special musical number in Sacrament Meeting.<br />
<br />
The thought: <span style="font-size: x-large;">let the kids VOTE.</span><br />
<br />
With all the hoopla that's been going on the past few months around the Presidential election (living in Colorado, we've had a LARGER-THAN-NORMAL dose this year), I thought the kids might like to have their own opportunity to cast a vote. <span style="font-size: x-large;">To let their voices be heard.</span><br />
<br />
We sang through all three songs, then took a vote by raise of hands to see what song would be selected.<br />
<br />
The winner:<br />
<br />
After tallying up both Jr. and Sr. Primaries,<span style="font-size: x-large;"> My Heavenly Father Loves Me</span> won by 4 votes.<br />
<br />

</div>
<br />
I had this song on the schedule to work on with the Primary kids for November/Thanksgiving, and once I saw that they will be singing it next year for the program, I figured <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">now was as good a time as ever</span> to put a flip chart together.<br />
<br />
You can access the link <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxMWUwUlBvZGswMms"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">here</span></a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDNMPk0aUHPl9e2Fe3MTkYjUymzH-MNrdJaeZhExQdB0hZk09f8hcc2_Y2GxD4b8pOcBhxmfsHbj9RdDld2i9onnuEZeir26Oqn4ewhsepQzFQPxl3hSxP_O2ipjd_njVSH6td7S9DksM/s1600/0001yJ_2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="634" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDNMPk0aUHPl9e2Fe3MTkYjUymzH-MNrdJaeZhExQdB0hZk09f8hcc2_Y2GxD4b8pOcBhxmfsHbj9RdDld2i9onnuEZeir26Oqn4ewhsepQzFQPxl3hSxP_O2ipjd_njVSH6td7S9DksM/s640/0001yJ_2.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxMWUwUlBvZGswMms">My Heavenly Father Loves Me</a></span><br />
<br />
<i>Note: I intentionally changed the wording in the song from "...or walk by <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">our</span> lilac tree..." to "...or walk by <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">a</span> lilac tree..." because the majority of children in my ward do not have a lilac tree in their yard. We have several in common areas of a neighborhood in our ward, and I figured that the intent of the words was to think about the amazing beauty and scent of lilacs. I realize that some may want the exact words from the Children's Songbook...)</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
I also just had to share what an amazing job the children in my ward did on the Primary program last Sunday. It couldn't have gone better. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">They are awesome. </span> I have to admit that I feel a little awkward when members tell me what a great job <i>I </i>did... I have to give the credit to the kids. I just waved my arms around to have them stand up, sing, and sit down. They (and our cute Primary counselor who put it all together) did the rest.<br />
<br />
We performed all 4 verses to <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/I%20Feel%20My%20Savior%27s%20Love">I Feel My Savior's Love</a> -- I asked for volunteers for solos or small groups to sing the verses and had an <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">overwhelming response</span>. I plan to incorporate those kinds of opportunities more in the future. I had the Primary sing the chorus to each verse as the soloists/small groups switched out in front of the microphone. It worked out amazingly well.<br />

<br />
Like I had mentioned, I did not make Elmer. He was an exchange from a FHE group of young mothers I was a part of over 20 years ago. He was well-made and durable, evidenced by his <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">longevity</span>. {Love that.}<br />

<br />
The questions I received were concerning how I <i>use</i> him. He was intended to be a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">music conductor</span> - you (or a helper) put your arm into the long sock, and then, while holding the poster, lead the music. I have used him in Jr. <i>and</i> Sr. Primary, and the Nursery. I have found that even the older kids get a kick out him (and usually beg to be the helper).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
I recently took him into the Nursery for Singing Time and discovered that he is just as <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">well-loved</span> as ever. I will usually "introduce" him to the kids and shake each of their hands with his trunk. It's super fun to watch how those little Nursery kids respond... some are a little nervous (they seem to not make the connection that it's your arm in his trunk), and some can't wait to touch him and shake his "trunk."</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
If something ever happened to him, I would definitely invest the time and effort to replace him, he has been <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">that</span> valuable.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Happy Singing Time,</div>

I made these for the Nursery last week... I have found that the kids love to each hold <i>somethin</i>g when we sing. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I also thought these might curb the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">jumping</span> that seems to be naturally inherent with this song in Nursery.<br />
You can access the link to make them <strike>here</strike>.<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">(Sorry, guys... I somehow must have deleted this file from my drive :( My computer had to have an overhaul, and in my attempt to organize my files I have somehow lost this one. I'm sure I got most of the pictures I used on this by searching google images... I believe the sunbeam pic was a PNG. I hope that helps! Again, my apologies!)</span><br />

So I <i>finally</i> checked my calendar, and we have <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">4 weeks</span> before our Primary Sacrament Meeting Program.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">I thought I would be "super organized" and plan out all four weeks NOW. <i>So</i> unlike me. Hopefully my early preparation will help you, too, should you decide to work on the BUGS in <i>your</i> Program songs.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXFNPSf0FDRMa8Rsmdsq7ENArEps3UUDOk1ld0x1xP_UwxdsmbjyX7QbSUGu0m8-ALDTaLclRdfHIvV4MmZeGnPrsLMfXdxA0WgmgMTTLrVQa6lfhneVT7Tq5aerAJx1Eoe9nwyr4E8Ho/s1600/bug+logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXFNPSf0FDRMa8Rsmdsq7ENArEps3UUDOk1ld0x1xP_UwxdsmbjyX7QbSUGu0m8-ALDTaLclRdfHIvV4MmZeGnPrsLMfXdxA0WgmgMTTLrVQa6lfhneVT7Tq5aerAJx1Eoe9nwyr4E8Ho/s400/bug+logo.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Week 1:</span><br />
(Really week 2, since we worked on it last Sunday, but I don't want to veer off my <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">4-Week Plan</span>, so as not to confuse myself.)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/04/spin-human.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Spin-the-Human</span></a> (again) to finish up our initial BUG testing. I am going to focus on getting through<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"> every</span> song. I will continue to use my <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6S_8KBQBYDxOEt5cEVaM19hQTg/edit">Big Bug pictures</a> and my <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6S_8KBQBYDxbUM1VEQyVHl5UTg/edit">ratings system</a> from last week.<br />
<br />
To add some <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">incentive</span>, I am going to tell the children that IF they work really hard all 4 weeks, and perform amazingly well, we will have a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">BUG Celebration</span> in Primary after the program.<br />
<br />

(We could even use the pre-packaged lunch-size pudding cups, remove the peel-away top, and just put a spoonful of crushed Oreos and a gummy bug or two on top...)<br />
<br />
Or these (found <a href="http://gingerbreadbagels.com/2011/06/20/worms-in-dirt-cupcakes/">here</a>):<br />

I'm going to keep my eye out for gummy <i>bugs</i> rather than worms... but if worms are all I can find, I'm sure the kids will still be thrilled.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
For whatever reason, kids behave/perform better if they have a reward at the end (don't we all).<br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">WEEK 2:</span><br />
<br />
I figure that if any week is going to be more on the "fun" side (vs the down-and-dirty-meticulous-refining side), it had better be now, since the following two weeks need to have complete <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">focus </span>(and we will most likely be running through the full program each Sunday anyway).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrZNuSWu9u2j78yRG5TiIec6s9pdoyThTacgHAM7Xm5wl3dGk-cpZTPGJ7mbk_bM0AKUi4kdveY9PIizDtHNYJa_xq4lqq2-IOrSAjcW11Jc9qKkZ0LB-LXEonz6TIZ9v0ay1CLEanphc/s1600/0711-flyswatter-mdn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrZNuSWu9u2j78yRG5TiIec6s9pdoyThTacgHAM7Xm5wl3dGk-cpZTPGJ7mbk_bM0AKUi4kdveY9PIizDtHNYJa_xq4lqq2-IOrSAjcW11Jc9qKkZ0LB-LXEonz6TIZ9v0ay1CLEanphc/s400/0711-flyswatter-mdn.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
We are going to play <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">WHACK-A-BUG</span> (idea from <a href="http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1661&Itemid=5">here</a>). I am going to cut out smaller versions of my bugs (pdf <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxR19fcU1pX0JILUE"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">here</span></a>) - each with a corresponding program song - and tape them to small-ish balloons, putting them all in a black trash bag. I will choose a helper who will reach into the bag and pull out a balloon. We will sing the selected song, and if the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Bug Expert</span> (I may ask a special guest - like the Bishop - to be the "expert") determines the song to be Bug <i>Free</i>, the helper will get to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">WHACK</span> the bug with a fly swatter, thumbtack attached. If the song still has some obvious bugs, it goes back into the bag.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">WEEK 3:</span><br />
<br />
Because we have three wards that meet in our building, we are not able to practice for the program in the chapel. IF I have a regular Singing Time (doubtful, but I'm waiting to hear from the Presidency what the plans are), I am going to do the review activity found<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"> <a href="http://afprimarysingingtime.blogspot.com/2011/09/get-bugs-out.html">here</a></span>. Should we be running through the program in it's entirety, I'm going to save this activity for Primary the week OF the program as part of our BUG Celebration.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">WEEK 4: </span><br />
(<i>and</i> 3, IF we are running through the whole program the entire time we're in Primary both weeks):<br />
<br />
<br />
I plan to have adult helpers (teachers maybe?) help me find children doing their absolute best. I will have bug stickers and tell the kids that if they get a sticker,<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">they've been caught: </span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #93c47d;">{B}</span>eing</i></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #93c47d;">{U}</span>nusually</i></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #93c47d;">{G}</span>ood</i></span><br />
<br />
I figure it's a low-key, non-disruptive way to still give encouragement and motivation on our final practice(s).<br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Program Week:</span><br />
<br />
BUG Celebration!<br />
<i>If</i> I was able to do the Week 3 activity <i>on</i> Week 3, I hope to make a new <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/09/we-all-sing-for-ice-cream.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Punch Board Game</span></a> (I'm still sad that my other one was ruined in the <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-rains-came-down.html">flood</a>) - something along the lines of "Don't BUG me, I'm SINGING." I will probably put some fun songs, fun ways to sing, and "choose your favorite" tags, along with some plastic bugs, behind the punches. (I will post pics when/if I get it done.)<br />
<br />
Then the kids can enjoy their cupcake or pudding cup. <br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Oh yeah, a plan feels <i>so</i> good.</span><br />
<a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54489/250/488587EDCDDB19E0C23E85386125FD81.png" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border-bottom-width: 0px !important; border-color: initial !important; border-left-width: 0px !important; border-right-width: 0px !important; border-style: initial !important; border-top-width: 0px !important;" /></a><br />
A <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">little</span> FYI: While glancing through a couple of Singing Time blogs yesterday, I came across a link for an arrangement of <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><i>Stand for the Right/Dare to Do Right</i></span>. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">I would like give the link to the blog I found the info on, but can't find it again today :-( </span><br />
<br />
Since my Primary has learned both songs, I think I'm going to try this arrangement for the program. You can check it out <a href="http://www.texansusan.com/children.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">here</span></a>. I think I'm <i>also</i> going to use the slow accompaniment for the 3rd verse of Nephi's Courage. A huge THANK YOU to Susan for sharing her talent!Tinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08693128405088608808noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8344437777585158395.post-37047273332836708412012-08-26T07:36:00.000-07:002012-08-27T11:22:58.366-07:00Program Practice Brainstorm - Getting the Bugs Out<br />
This has been a crazy busy week. I have panicked a few times as I occasionally wondered <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">WHAT</span> I would do for Singing Time this Sunday. I quickly checked over the newly posted ideas of others, but just couldn't make a decision on what direction to go. I was out of town last week, and my sweet sub kindly dropped off my visuals and plan <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">last night</span></i>. (I know - pathetic when you can't find the time to go pick them up!!) Our program is about a month away, and I knew I wanted to start reviewing and perfecting our songs, and naturally I left it to this morning (Sunday - eek!) to pull something together.<br />
<br />
I quickly browsed through <a href="http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1063&Itemid=200024">Sugardoodle</a> (haven't done that for a while), started down one path (oh-so-briefly), then ran across <a href="http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1661&Itemid=5">these ideas</a>. The fog started to clear, and I thought of several ideas to change things up while sticking with the same "Getting the Bugs Out" theme the next 4 or 5 weeks (I <i>really</i> need to check my calendar to see exactly how many weeks until the program!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-l3kjTjA2qtcKvWsaZxHG525t1pDxUU96pWAjKF6Lx2RhfO5iWETkm6rPcgd9xMwk48ZcHiUIBAvtdEh9oBLDp2jhX_GSjuN04CjxyrUyeJ9fX0AxGlDEIQICCnlC8fC8KlnWjW12fiU/s1600/grasshopper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-l3kjTjA2qtcKvWsaZxHG525t1pDxUU96pWAjKF6Lx2RhfO5iWETkm6rPcgd9xMwk48ZcHiUIBAvtdEh9oBLDp2jhX_GSjuN04CjxyrUyeJ9fX0AxGlDEIQICCnlC8fC8KlnWjW12fiU/s640/grasshopper.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Today, because I am short on time (I hate leaving it to the last minute, but it was seriously all I could do this week), I am going to keep it simple.<br />
<br />
I quickly found some bug clipart and made them nice and big. You can access the pdf <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxOEt5cEVaM19hQTg">here</a>. Today we will play an old favorite, <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/04/spin-human.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Spin-the-Human</span></a> (I was reminded of this game <a href="http://mormonmamaonamission.blogspot.com/2012/08/spin-singer.html">here</a>), using the big bugs. I will introduce our new project of "getting the bugs out" of our program songs. I'm going to write the songs we are working on the the back of each bug - as each bug is chosen (via spinning-the-human), we will sing the song and then rate how good we sang it (I am anticipating the need for LOTS of improvement).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPujSCLkkk2w1g6JksntosiHtfa-KKqke-hCiGLP51ZcPm5SpE-S0UHqKaQw3Ku6Y8EbfvtSnpynTRxOBkmBikSbsHi2Oz3-XvhAUrMxqdAKM9kwQ5wGJVuzkE-6Ge63IvrqyE29LIPWA/s1600/fly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPujSCLkkk2w1g6JksntosiHtfa-KKqke-hCiGLP51ZcPm5SpE-S0UHqKaQw3Ku6Y8EbfvtSnpynTRxOBkmBikSbsHi2Oz3-XvhAUrMxqdAKM9kwQ5wGJVuzkE-6Ge63IvrqyE29LIPWA/s640/fly.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Exterminated</span> (Near perfect - I don't expect ANY of those today)<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Shriveled </span> (almost there, dynamics need work)<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Get the RAID</span> (some parts really need help)<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Infestation</span> (the whole song needs a ton a work)<br />
<br />
<br />
I will hopefully have time this next week to make my entire Program Practice plan (<i>and</i> check out my calendar), and will post it as soon as I get it done.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Happy Sunday!</span><br />
<a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54489/250/488587EDCDDB19E0C23E85386125FD81.png" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-width: 0px !important; border-color: initial !important; border-left-width: 0px !important; border-right-width: 0px !important; border-style: initial !important; border-top-width: 0px !important;" /></a><br />
<br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Post post: </span> This went great today, although we only made it through 3 of our songs as we tried to get some oh-so-obvious BUGS out by singing through them at least twice. Our cute pianist decided our ratings. I managed to print some rating signs out before church - I just didn't have time to post them. You can find the pdf for them <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxbUM1VEQyVHl5UTg"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">here</span></a>. The good news: no INFESTATIONS so far. Whew! Hoping for all the bugs to have this on them by Program time:</i><br />

You know how sometimes, just when you think things are going pretty good... so good, in fact that you actually say, "Gosh, things are going pretty good right now...", then <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">BAM!</span> you get dinged with some challenge or another?<br />
<br />
Just because I had reached a comfort level with the Primary visuals I had spent many an hour creating (enough to even mention it <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/08/im-trying-to-be-like-jesus.html">here</a>) the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">rains came down</span>... in a toilet flooding kind of way<br />
(you can read more about it <a href="http://www.syddallfamilylifeissweet.blogspot.com/2012/08/you-get-what-you-pray-for.html">here</a>).<br />
<br />
A good chunk of my Primary Singing Time visuals: <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">damaged</span>.<br />

<br />
I have briefly surveyed the damage and attempted a few saves.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/meet-fam.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Bubblegum Bessie</span></a> will have to lose her legs (luckily not her dress, which will become a maxi skirt rather than a knee-length). It will be interesting to see if the children notice that she is suddenly shorter. <i>Much</i> shorter.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/03/betty-spaghetti.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Baby Betty Spaghetti</span></a>, fortunately, did not suffer bodily harm, but will need adjustments to her block and signage, and a replacement of the bottom command-hook-for-winding-spaghetti on the back.<br />
<br />
My <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/09/we-all-sing-for-ice-cream.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Ice Cream Punch Board</span></a> is TOAST. I salvaged the socks from the back, and will have to start over.<br />
<br />
Gratefully, my <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/uno-simplified.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">UNO game</span></a> was unscathed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<i>This</i> scripture came to mind:<br />
<br />
"We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed..." (2 Corinthians 4:8-9)<br />
<br />

I think I've said this before, but I am a believer in <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">keeping it simple</span>. At least that's what I keep <i>reminding</i> myself, lest I spend endless hours in preparation for Singing Time each week, with an additional hour (or so) posting it. (Not counting the hour -- or so -- spent perusing ideas of others.)<br />
<br />
I've also mentioned that I have nary a creative bone in my body. Every idea shared here is <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">borrowed</span>. Makes me think that perhaps my re-posting of it, with my own personal spin or take on it, is possibly unnecessary and not as beneficial as I would like to think.<br />
<br />
I've ALSO come to the realization that with the various visuals I have made over the past year, I have <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">ENOUGH</span>. I do not need more. I do not need to impress the Primary children with my innovative ideas and games (not really mine anyway). They do not need something new <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">every</span> week. They wait with anticipation for the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">old stand-bys</span>, which, when spread out a bit, are more than sufficient to add interest and motivation.<br />
<br />
That said, I DID print off a flip chart for <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus</span></i>. I cannot take credit for it (original found <a href="http://www.sugardoodle.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4716">here</a>), but I made a few modifications to make it work for me. You can access my slightly revamped version <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxQXdBQzdScXVDUUU">here</a></span>.<br />
<br />
I plan to start teaching it this Sunday, and will most likely use my <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/uno-simplified.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">simplified UNO game</span></a>. The children haven't seen it for a while (some not at all), and I think it will work perfectly with this song.<br />
<br />
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.<br />

Yesterday I did <span style="font-size: x-large;">THREE</span> separate Singing Times - something I'd rather not repeat! Even with some decent prep throughout the week, I was still scrambling as I headed out the door, hoping I had remembered everything. The Junior Primary still needed to finish their <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2012/07/pioneer-trek.html">Pioneer Trek</a>, the Senior had finished it last week, and then I had Nursery to finish up the block.<br />
<br />
Thanks to a <span style="font-size: x-large;">plethora</span> of Olympic ideas from many other blogs (<a href="http://intheleafytreetopsthebirdssing.blogspot.com/2012/07/primary-singing-olympics.html">here</a>, <a href="http://iheartprimarymusic.blogspot.com/2012/07/summer-olympic-review.html">here</a>, <a href="http://camillesprimaryideas.blogspot.com/2012/07/primary-olympics.html">here</a>, and <a href="http://singingasongisfun2do.blogspot.com/2012/07/olympics-singing-time.html">here</a>), I was able to pull something <span style="font-size: large;">{simple}</span> and <i>fun</i> together for the Senior Primary, which we will finish up with this upcoming week. I plan to cut it down even more for Junior Primary (only 4 events), so we can get through it in ONE Singing Time and get everyone back on the <span style="font-size: x-large;">same schedule</span>.<br />
<br />
(Printouts of the Olympic pictograms I used <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxNUFVRVpYX1JHSkE">here</a>. I just taped them to the white board with the pictogram on front, song and activity written on the back.)<br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">SINGING OLYMPICS SONG REVIEW</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>The Wise Man and the Foolish Man</i> (EQUESTRIAN) </span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
choose a word or two to "jump" over (skip) while singing</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Nephi's Courage</i> (VOLLEYBALL)</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
I printed out a volleyball, put it on a paint stick, and divided the Primary in half with an imaginary "net" down the middle. As I moved the ball from one side to the other, the kids would sing when the ball was in their court.</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKsGPeqrhUe5zWQqnDkKWvCAOWEalWGihPExR4YD_7rOPUysgyXQq15rdjezps4N6SqaaayJzlEMuWmiPNklTzZkBVIPGu9kCGr18E0PM-p37D9b2aWdkN_pThMXKmRR1Isi1btkREkMk/s1600/volleyball.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKsGPeqrhUe5zWQqnDkKWvCAOWEalWGihPExR4YD_7rOPUysgyXQq15rdjezps4N6SqaaayJzlEMuWmiPNklTzZkBVIPGu9kCGr18E0PM-p37D9b2aWdkN_pThMXKmRR1Isi1btkREkMk/s400/volleyball.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>When I Am Baptized</i> (SYNCHRONIZED <strike>SWIMMING</strike> SIGNING)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I taught the kids this song in ASL - a great review</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Choose the Right </i>(BASKETBALL)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We didn't get to this one yesterday, but I have a soft mini basketball (I thought of bringing a regular ball, but worried that someone might get hit in the head with it), and I will divide the Primary into 4 groups, then have one group start the song, and then with each phrase of the verse, have them pass it to another group, with everyone joining in for the chorus (as a "team").</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>As a Child of God</i> (SWIMMING - 400 IM)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For each of the three verses the kids would do a different swim stroke (Fly, Back, Breast), and we would all Freestyle the chorus.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Stand for the Right</i> (WEIGHTLIFTING)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I gave the children the option to curl or press their scriptures, OR they could challenge themselves with placing their scriptures on the palm of their hand with their arm outstretched for the duration of the song (which turned out to be pretty easy, since it's a short song. If we have time to review again this week, I might make them sing it through a couple more times).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Dare to Do Right</i> (CYCLING)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We didn't get to this one either, but I just plan to have the kids stay in their seats and cycle their legs while singing the song.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Hum Your Favorite Hymn </i>(MARATHON)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sing each verse using only one breath. The first time through it was impossible, so our pianist sped it up for the second verse, which worked perfectly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had printed out a few of the medals found <a href="http://intheleafytreetopsthebirdssing.blogspot.com/2012/07/primary-singing-olympics.html">here</a>, and had our Primary Secretary (who just happened to be the one available), determine if the singing was worthy of a gold, silver, or bronze medal. She was great, as the kids were a little rowdy the first two events, and she gave them bronze medals because the <span style="font-size: large;">start </span>and <span style="font-size: large;">finish</span> needed some work ;-) I told them if we have time this upcoming week, they may get a <span style="font-size: x-large;">second chance at gold</span> on the songs (and behavior) that still need some work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I promised them a <span style="font-size: x-large;">medal ceremony</span> this upcoming week - if I can get it together I'm going to make the awards found <a href="http://intheleafytreetopsthebirdssing.blogspot.com/2012/07/primary-singing-olympics.html">here</a>. If not, I will compensate with something even <i>simpler, </i>determined in a moment of desperation (when I do my best creative substitution thinking).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Again, a <span style="font-size: x-large;">HUGE thank you</span> for all the great ideas to glean from - they totally saved my bacon!</div>

Glancing through some posts about Pioneer Day Singing Times, I ran across <a href="http://iheartprimarymusic.blogspot.com/2012/07/pioneer-day.html">this</a> one. It reminded me that I HAD a trek map... handed down to me by the <i>last</i> chorister (I can't take the artistic credit)... that I had re-used last year. Sure enough, it was neatly rolled up in the corner of my closet, begging to be used <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">again</span>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuFvTGdvFNQyKFOG1gJI92gIPovwyzkHIQVXo24nYOt-rGXhYhFrc0IHucsUdGMgjI1SkBjkUrtFo8DAift0ZlZNDlUGjCLDHXomeoJWpJZsjbnaArZwcFcKqNzJxTDEG1h2vx2ZMFd-U/s1600/DSC07421.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuFvTGdvFNQyKFOG1gJI92gIPovwyzkHIQVXo24nYOt-rGXhYhFrc0IHucsUdGMgjI1SkBjkUrtFo8DAift0ZlZNDlUGjCLDHXomeoJWpJZsjbnaArZwcFcKqNzJxTDEG1h2vx2ZMFd-U/s640/DSC07421.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It may be late to be sharing (although we didn't quite get to the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">valley-o</span> in Singing Time in Jr. Primary so we'll be continuing our journey this week), but I figured I would post it anyway as a reference for future years :-) This will be the third year in a row that some of the kids in our Primary have seen this map, but it still works <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">amazingly well</span> (the best kind of visual!!). I mixed the songs up this year to use some of the songs we've been working on (so easy to do, since there are so many great pioneer stories that can tie in to almost any song), and didn't really have time to write out a script, but the kids really liked it. I ALSO took <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/meet-fam.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Big Voice Robby</span></a>, as promised. I still had notes from last year, so I will share BOTH Singing Time plans (bonus!).<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">Stops on the map:</span><br />
<br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Nauvoo</b></span></i> (I Love to See the Temple) - we talked about the sacrifice the Saints made to build the temple, and then how they had to leave it to be destroyed.<br />
<br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Winter Quarters</b></span></i> (this year we sang Nephi's Courage and talked about the courage to keep going, even when things were hard, last year we sang I Know My Father Lives)<br />
<br />
<i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Chimney Rock</span></b> </i>(this year we sang Pioneer Children Were Quick to Obey, last year we sang Pioneer Children Sang as They Walked - I told about how the pioneers could see Chimney Rock from a long way off, and then they would walk for several days before they actually reached it; the songwriter said, "We are all pioneers - none of us has been in this day before. Earlier pioneers had no automobiles, railroads, airplanes, telephones, electricity, radios or television, but they sang as they walked and walked. We can sing as we walk through today, or we can grouch every step of the way and be miserable.")<br />
<br />
<i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Sweetwater Crossing</span></b></i> (this year we sang Dare to Do Right, last year we sang Love One Another - both times we reviewed the story of the three young men who carried the handcart company across the river in the freezing cold)<br />
<br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><i>Martin's Cove</i> </span></b>(this year we sang To Be a Pioneer, last year we sang I Will Follow God's Plan for Me and I shared the story of Bodil Mortensen, a 10 year old girl - and cried.)<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Rocky Ridge</span></b> </i>(This year we sang The Oxcart, last year we sang The Handcart Song - original words written in the missionary journal of John Daniel Thompson McAllister, who had written the song to motivate the Saints of Ireland to emigrate to Utah. He later served as the president of the Manti Temple.)<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>"This is the Right Place"</b></span></i> - Salt Lake Valley (Follow the Prophet)<br />
<br />
<br />
This is our wagon that we move along the stops on the map:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUk_V_VtPwsj9kR3tglM7M1m4otjM-RisWBFNSWThi22UF6I-dh6VKHOOap5Iw3F3F_zE1nSqfAL0Y4yh-RM6KYt6_5IjEuvw7ywsKE88G4Tpb528gsLhDpAVkGfA3F7bjxTp26zYWaSA/s1600/2979b_2.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUk_V_VtPwsj9kR3tglM7M1m4otjM-RisWBFNSWThi22UF6I-dh6VKHOOap5Iw3F3F_zE1nSqfAL0Y4yh-RM6KYt6_5IjEuvw7ywsKE88G4Tpb528gsLhDpAVkGfA3F7bjxTp26zYWaSA/s320/2979b_2.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A few other fun facts (more interesting to the Sr. Primary):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It took a handcart company only 85 days to go from Winter Quarters to the Salt Lake Valley, while it took a covered wagon company 111 days to complete the same journey. Those oxcarts were SLOW!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A total of 3,193 pioneers came across the plains pushing handcarts. Each cart was limited to 100 pounds.</div>
<a href="http://www.mylivesignature.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.com/54489/250/488587EDCDDB19E0C23E85386125FD81.png" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border-bottom-width: 0px !important; border-color: initial !important; border-left-width: 0px !important; border-right-width: 0px !important; border-style: initial !important; border-top-width: 0px !important;" /></a>Tinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08693128405088608808noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8344437777585158395.post-13600361590823048892012-07-18T13:45:00.000-07:002012-07-18T13:46:35.844-07:00To Be a Pioneer<br />
As I was looking through my <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/sharing-time-and-talents.html">files</a>, I ran across a flip chart I made last year for <span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>To Be a Pioneer</i></span>.<br />
<br />
You can access it <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxQXY1MDVBRWk1WDg"><span style="font-size: x-large;">here</span></a>. <br />
<br />
Then I remembered <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/meet-fam.html">this</a> little guy:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTBdkJjTzq6FXhtpw2yD8o7FkRFsyXIrQgkSodwWOGwXeROLD3UumlbNmHCA1WD5u1trmzuExxB4qFmTNgXXQnJ5jLgNfDjFdNf_d806yR-ENQ_EmVIhfi-ef6lPQFt4St0Bofed1Yk9k/s1600/P1040493.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTBdkJjTzq6FXhtpw2yD8o7FkRFsyXIrQgkSodwWOGwXeROLD3UumlbNmHCA1WD5u1trmzuExxB4qFmTNgXXQnJ5jLgNfDjFdNf_d806yR-ENQ_EmVIhfi-ef6lPQFt4St0Bofed1Yk9k/s640/P1040493.jpeg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Have I mentioned how <span style="font-size: x-large;">I love a good multi-purpose visual aid</span>? I was grateful for the additional "help" in Primary last week (<i>and</i> this week).<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">My mantra: re-purpose, re-cycle, <i>re-use</i>.</span><br />
<br />
Last week I just had the kids toss a ball into his mouth... this week I think I'll make <span style="font-size: x-large;">popcorn</span>; then make baggies of popcorn for each of the children to take home. When I pass out treats to the kids (I think I've done it twice in the past year), I hand them out AFTER church is over, telling the Jr. Primary kids to stop back by the Primary Room on their way out. It works out great because I don't have to feel guilty about giving them something that is disruptive to Sharing Time and classes, and I get to see them all again before they head home.<br />

I made a flip chart for <span style="font-size: x-large;">Pioneer Children Were Quick to Obey</span>. <br />
<br />
Link <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B6S_8KBQBYDxS1lOZjNTdTZHYWM"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>here</i></span></a>.<br />
<br />
I'm still trying to figure out what I did last year for Pioneer Day... it had something to do with pioneer bonnets and hats... the children would choose a hat for their teacher to wear... Most of our male teachers ended up wearing bonnets... I can't remember all the details, but I DO remember the kids thought it was<span style="font-size: x-large;"> hilarious</span>. <br />

The teachers were good sports, too.<br />

This summer has been crazy! I haven't had much time to bring anything "new" to Primary, but that's the beauty of flexible Singing Time visuals. I've used <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/08/meet-fam.html"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Bubble Gum Bessie</span></a> and the <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/2011/09/we-all-sing-for-ice-cream.html"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Ice Cream Punch Board</span></a> a <i>lot </i>lately. Hey... what child doesn't love, love, <span style="font-size: x-large;">love</span> to punch a punch board? These tried and true visuals have been <span style="font-size: x-large;">lifesavers</span>. I also appreciate that the initial effort put into them is totally <span style="font-size: x-large;">worth it</span>. <br />
<br />
For whatever reason, I have become suddenly aware that some of the songs we have been working on are too high for me to sing. I have found myself <span style="font-size: x-large;">{squeaking}</span> quite frequently through <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/Dare%20to%20Do%20Right">Dare to Do Right</a> and <a href="http://primarilysinging.blogspot.com/search/label/Life%20Is%20O%27erflowing">Life Is O'erflowing</a>. A while back, someone in my ward had mentioned (and I think I've read it on another blog...) that you can <span style="font-size: x-large;">change the key</span> of most Hymns and songs in the Children's Songbook <i>easily</i> (I love easy) on <a href="http://www.lds.org/cm/display/0,17631,4996-1,00.html">lds.org</a>, so I thought I would give it a try.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">It's AWESOME.</span><br />
<br />
I can't figure out how to post the actual finished key change for the song <i>Dare to Do Right</i> without scanning it, so I thought I would just share <span style="font-size: x-large;">how</span> to do it.<br />
<br />
Go to <a href="http://www.lds.org/?lang=eng">lds.org</a><br />
<br />
Click on MENU, then click on MUSIC (in the STUDY column)<br />
<br />
Again click MUSIC - it should bring up a drop down list, then click on INTERACTIVE CHURCH MUSIC PLAYER<br />
<br />
Click on ALL CHILDREN'S SONGS<br />
<br />
Find the song you would like to key change (listed alphabetically), and click on it. It will pull up the song as it is found in the Songbook.<br />
<br />
In the column to the left of the song, find the box that says KEY<br />
<br />
You can reset the key by clicking the up and down arrows (if you are musically talented, you can also select the key of your choice by clicking the small arrow next to the given key, and a drop down menu will come up). I took <i>Dare to Do Right</i> down a couple steps to the key of C - no sharps or flats, so I figured it would be an easy change for our pianist, too.<br />
<br />
Once you are satisfied with the key of the song, simply click PRINT.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">A.MAZ.ING.</span><br />
